The richest prize purse in tennis has gotten even bigger! The 2010 US Open purse has been announced and its even bigger than last year's record amount - a total of $22.6 million, one million more than last year's. In addition to this, the top three men’s and top three women’s finishers in the Olympus US Open Series leading up to the US Open 2010 may earn up to an additional $2.6 million in bonus prize money, providing a potential total payout of $25.2 million.
Juan Martin del Porto has already announced his intention to defend the title he snatched from Roger Federer last year. Despite being sidelined by a wrist injury almost all season, del Potro says he will be fit in time for the tournament. His main competition will be from Rafael Nadal, currently the world's number 1. Other men's contenders include Novak Djokovic, Rodger Federer, Andy Murray and Andy Roddick.
On the women's side, KIm Clijsters is the defending champion and will face the Williams sisters in the tournament. Serena, however, is doubtful to participate as she is still recuperating from a foot injury.
Who will win the million dollar prize of the 2010 US Open? For the 38th consecutive year, the USTA will offer equal prize money to both men and women -- a Grand Slam first and US Open tradition dating back to 1973.
